What Human Services Graduates Do

A Career in Human Services

Graduates work in clinics, hospitals, shelters and group homes performing a wide variety of tasks including assessing client needs, organizing and leading group activities. They work with clients, family members and healthcare providers to maximize client well-being. Graduates work in roles such as mental health aide, social work assistant, life skills counselor, case management aide and community outreach worker.

Human Services Job Responsibilities

The specific job responsibilities may vary to include case management, social work, counseling, advocacy and community organizing. Human services workers may provide emotional support, help clients establish program eligibility and arrange for client transportation.

The Skills You Need

Careers in human services demand leadership skills, effective communication skills and a strong sense of responsibility. People who choose careers in human services are understanding and have a strong desire to help others.

Field Experience

A 120-hour field experience (HSER 240) and an online field experience seminar (HSER 241) are required for completion of the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Human Services, and a one quarter internship is required for all Human Services Certificates. Internships play a critical role in preparing for employment in the field of social and human services by beginning the process of accumulating experiences along with one’s education.

Internships are available in work with youth, families, victims of domestic violence, substance abuse treatment, elder care, individuals with mental illness, people with developmental disabilities, housing and many, many other areas of need. Internship sites include an array of community-based non profit organizations, and those sponsored by state, county, and municipal services.

A brief advising session can provide you with the guidelines and resources for setting up your Human Services internship. Internships must be set up and ready to begin prior to the quarter enrolled.
